Cheti Chand is also known as Sindhi New Year and also remarked as Jhulelal Jayanthi, which was born day of Ishtadeva Uderolal. This year the festival Cheti Chand starts at 20:23:34 on 22nd March and ends at 18:23:22 on 23rd March.

What is Cheti Chand?

Cheti Chand is the New Year festival celebrated by the Sindhi community. As per the Hindu calendar, this festival falls on Chaitra month’s second day of the lunar fortnight. Especially, Sindhi people celebrate this festival as the beginning of the New Year. And this festival also denotes the arrival of spring and harvesting season. On this auspicious day, people pray for their wealth, to prevent them from the evils in this world and to get peaceful life forever to the almighty god Varun “the God of water”.

Generally, people will worship the god by going to nearby water bodies such as rivers, ponds, and lakes, by taking Bharana Sahib with the idol of Jhulelal Devta. Hence the Bharana Sahib, contains an oil lamp, cardamom, Akha, crystal sugar, Fruits, coconut, and flowers. The reason behind this tradition is to get blessings from the lord Varun by giving food to marine living things.

History of Cheti Chand

Cheti Chand is the Sindhu festival they celebrate the festival as a New Year. In the 10th century, the Sindh ruler Mirkshah will force the Hindus to convert them to Islam. The panchs get panic and ask for some grace time to think about it. To get a solution to this problem, they started to pray to the Varun god as an avatar of Lord Vishnu by gathering all of the panchs on the river bank to save them from the Ruler Mirkshah. Hence on the 40th day, they get a divine voice from heaven. That is to rescue them the god will take birth at Nasarpur in Ratan Chand Lohano’s house from Devaki’s womb.

At last, Devaki and Ratan Chand Lohano got a Son named Uderolal was born to save the Sindhi people from the ruler Mirkshah.

Hence, this day was considered a Cheti Chand that was celebrated by the Sindh people at Chitra month’s second day of the lunar fortnight.
